I started thinking the other day, about jewelry.
You know, the gemstones, the metals, the colors
of each that people seem to prefer over others. It
made me wonder about them through history, in
different places, different times, what people love
to wear still today.
There's gold, silver & copper, diamonds, emeralds,
& rubies, jade, pearl, & ivory, just to name a few.
All of them, and more, have been and/or still are
valued highly to this day.
All that thinking, (here I have edited greatly for
length!), caused me to ask, why?
Why are these stones and metals and whatnot
our choices for our finery?
I think I have the answer, or at least a theory.
(After reading this, feel free to let me know what
you think, whether you agree or not).
My theory is that, in an instinctive, buried-in-
our-subconscious way, like them because they
remind us of the things in nature that we cannot
wear upon ourselves. We can manipulate gold
for instance, into a bracelet or a ring, but not
the Sun. A diamond is shaped & polished to
perfection, but not any more sparklingly
brilliant than a field covered in snow. I could
go on and on, but you get the idea.
I personally like copper, silver, and opal. I
also absolutely love wood itself in jewelry as
well. To me, copper looks like fire & sunsets,
silver like streams in moonlight, opal like
snow-covered mountaintops, and well, wood
I suppose, is self-explanatory.
Tell me what your personal favorites are,
what in nature they remind you of, and
your opinion of my theory if you have one.
I'm eager to know your thoughts!
